Promise fulfilled with first album

Port St Johns-born singer Csana is finally living her dream after releasing her debut album. The album was released through the provincial recording label after numerous empty promises from people in the industry.

Csana, real name Nonguquko Mlaza, started singing at the age of 10 but never imagined one day she would have an album out.

She performed at various places in her home town and received a guitar from a good Samaritan, which she soon mastered.

Through her many performances, the young musician was noticed by Imbumba Yamakhosikazi, an organisation of traditional leaders’ wives from Nyandeni Great Place and was given a new guitar by the group.

“They supported me and made sure that I got everything I needed. ... I am really thankful for their support,” she said.

One of the women from Imbumba Yamakhosikazi, Nonkululo Mgcotyelwa, said they first met Csana in 2012 when she was asked to perform at their event.

“She had an old guitar which broke during her performance and she cried. As women, we could see this child loves what she’s doing and we decided to buy her a new one,” she said.

Mgcotyelwa said they were proud of Csana and hoped her voice would reach millions of people.

Csana’s music journey has not been without challenges. “When I used to perform at the Wild Coast Festival, people would come to me and say they would record me but none of them came back,” she said.

One of those was businessman Jabu Stone, who publicly committed to help Csana during the Wild Coast Cultural Festival in 2012.

The Dispatch at the time wrote how Stone would help Csana realise her dream of becoming a recording artist.

Stone could not be reached for comment at the time of writing yesterday.

Csana is one of eight artists and groups signed under the newly established Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre recording label.

Her debut album Imbokodo was released this year and last month it was launched along with the others in Johannesburg.

Her single Sgantsontso is currently receiving radio airplay and its music video is being screened on Mzansi Magic. ECAVC Records marketing manager Sisa Sopazi said they planned to get their artists gigs all over the country. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
