Marlene Neumann was named overall winner in the creative photography category at the Mbokodo Awards at the weekend

Held in Johannesburg last Friday, the awards are aimed at women who not only creatively express their talent but also empower communities and individuals through their art.

An initiative by Carol Bouwer Productions and the Department of Arts and Culture, winners of this award are chosen by their peers based on artistic and cultural achievements.

With 30 years experience in fine art photography and a strong focus on landscape photography, Neumann said what made her work unique was the signature black-andwhite darkroom technique.

Up against 60 women of all ages in 20 different categories, she said the win had left her speechless. Categories included creative writing, poetry, painting, sculpture, architecture, fashion design, dance and creative design.
