New school for DJs and presenters launched

Aspiring DJs and radio presenters will have a chance to enhance their skills with the launch of the Eastern Cape’s first broadcasting school.

The School of Broadcasting with AlgoaFM and Tové Kane will be launched next week as a result of a partnership between the station and the weekend presenter.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday Kane said the school aimed to provide a holistic experience for students wanting to get into radio or even television.

“We will focus on the technical aspects such as how to work the mixing desks but also on how to control your mindset and human spirit because you cannot really present anything if you are emotionally not okay,” said Kane.

She said the school was not just targeting aspirant radio or TV broadcasters, but was ideal for anyone who wanted to enhance their vocal ability.

“Often you go to a presentation and the manager of the company will have difficulty with the projector or the entire presentation, so those people would also benefit from this school because we help them build up that confidence and prepare their minds,” she said.

Kane said the school was unique in that there were no requirements for admission.

“We will have a structure later, maybe group people according to their ages but for now anyone of any age, with or without any qualifications can apply,” said Kane.

She said teaching has always been a passion of hers.

“My son calls me ‘professor’ because I teach people. The idea for the school was because I wish I had a mentor,” she said.

Algoa FM’s Jennilee Peremore said an introductory course at R5000 a student would be offered at the station’s studios in Port Elizabeth before expanding.

“We are first testing whether the school will take off. Once we see the feedback it receives we could consider extending it to other parts of the province. At this point we are only offering the introduction course, but the other courses, intermediate and professional will be made available later,” said Peremore.

She said online registration was available through the station’s website. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
