The poor trust us: ANC

THE ANC on Tuesday denied assertions made by Numsa that the poor and working class had lost faith in the party.

"Since 1994, the working class and the poor have had and continue to have confidence, trust and faith in the leadership of the ANC," spokesman Zizi Kodwa said in a statement.

"The African National Congress will not be deterred from our political responsibility to build unity of the Tripartite Alliance and workers in particular."

The statement follows Monday's announcement by the National Union of Metalworkers of SA that it would be forging ahead with the launch of its own political party, the United Front in December.

Numsa said it would however remain a Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) affiliate.

The decision to form the United Front was first announced in December 2013 during a special Numsa national congress. The union decided to no longer support the ruling ANC and its affiliate Cosatu in the 2014 general elections, saying they no longer represented workers' interests.

He said the ANC remained committed to implementing the Election Manifesto South Africans voted for in their "overwhelming" numbers in 2014 and previous general elections.

"We are resolute in our determination to deliver on the commitments made to the masses of our people, including on the National Minimum Wage," he said.
