Mbete social media accounts fake: Parly

Social media accounts in National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete's name are not legitimate, Parliament said on Monday.

"We wish, again, to state categorically that Ms Mbete does not have social media accounts in her name," it said in a statement.

A Twitter account @BalekaMbete, and marked as a parody account, became active again on Saturday.

One tweet from the account reads: "Fellow South Africans, I'd like to inform the nation that tomorrow I'm handing a letter to the nation assembly to tender my resignation".

The tweet, posted on Sunday, was re-tweeted 110 times by 4pm on Monday, and marked as a favourite nine times.

On September 16, opposition leaders walked out of Parliament following an insult-laden debate on a motion of no confidence in Mbete.

Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane opened the debate on the motion, arguing that Mbete had an untenable conflict of interest as Speaker because she also serves as African National Congress chairwoman.

The DA, Economic Freedom Fighters and other opposition parties left the chamber, which left the ANC to easily defeat the vote of no confidence.
