We have the right man: police

Police this afternoon said they were confident the man arrested in connection with the murder of Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa played a part in the crime.

"We are confident he is linked to the crime and he will be charged with murder and robbery," divisional commissioner of detective services, Lieutenant-General Vinesh Moonoo, told reporters in Johannesburg.

Moonoo said investigations had revealed that two people, and not three, were involved in the shooting last Sunday. It was initially claimed that two people entered the house and a third stayed outside.

Meyiwa, also captain of Orlando Pirates, was killed in Vosloorus while visiting his singer and actress girlfriend Kelly Khumalo. Two people allegedly entered the house and demanded cellphones before fleeing.

"From what we have investigated, there were two people on the scene," he said.

"We have detained and questioned 13 people with regard to the killing of Senzo Meyiwa. After questioning all the suspects, we decided to arrest only one at this stage. The individual arrested is 25-year-old Zanokuhle Mbatha from Vosloorus."

Mbatha appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Friday. The matter was postponed to November 11. Moonoo said police were at a stage where they could focus on a court-driven investigation and follow up on other leads.

"But this does not mean the end of the investigation. We have cast the net as wide as possible to look at each and every possibility," he said.
