Hip-hop act revive '90s kwaito smash

MDANTSANE  hip-hop group Manskap is making a comeback  with the release of a remix of the kwaito hit, Dlala. The three-member group first  released an album in 2005.

The single Dlala, originally done by Duncan Village kwaito artist Super in 1999, put local kwaito on the national map.

Lens, Bond and Dbeera of Manskap are confident that  releasing the song will bring back good memories and revive pride in local music.

Lens, real name Lungelo Mampofu, told the Saturday Dispatch the group initially had five members, but two left due to work commitments.

“We decided to choose Dlala as it was a catchy song in 1999. Everybody could easily sing along to it,” he said.

“We loved and danced to that song and people were proud to know people were talking about a song that was produced in our province.”

They worked with Super on the remix, recorded at a  music studio in Mdantsane.  For mastering and mixing, they used a Joburg-based company.

Dbeera, real name Mawethu Matebese, said the remix was a way of thanking East London businessman Koko Godlo, who  mentors and manages Mdantsane and Duncan Village artists.

“He introduced to us Mashava, Super, Mazembe and others. He gave a platform and saw the importance of arts in this township.”

The first single on the  album, Ngapha Nangapha,  has had more than 5000 downloads on bozza.mobi

Following Dlala’s release, they will shoot a music video  in Mdantsane and  drop it before the end of the year.

Youngest member Bond, real name  Khwezi Gumse, said: “We still tackle social issues. We never wanted to be that group that only sang about parties and girls, and when we look at the music industry we see there is growth.” — mamelag@dispatch.co.za
