King of East to defend crown

Rapper Yahkeem Ben Israel will be defending his “King of the East” title at this year’s SA Hip-Hop Awards.

Israel was announced as one of the nominees for the King of the East title yesterday in Newton.

Other nominees include; Tru FM radio presenter Buck Matyila and rapper Tsviel The Prince.

Israel said he was honoured to have been nominated again for the award.

“A lot has happened since my win last year. The award has really opened doors for me and I do not take that for granted.”

The Port Elizabeth-based rapper said he tried to uplift other aspiring artists in his area by giving them platforms to perform.

“This is not about Yahkeem the rapper, it is now time for me to give back to the community,” he said.

In each province, there are nominees for the king of that province award. People nominated for the award have to be individuals who had contributed to the development of hip-hop in their respective provinces.

The SA Hip-Hop Awards had their inaugural event in 2012 and Mthatha-born poet and songwriter Nkqo was crowned the King of the East then.

Israel’s involvement in the development of the hip-hop includes his annual Grass Roots Arts Festival which not only sees artists perform but there are workshops as well.

“Last year we had Samro coming in to educate the artists about the importance of registration their music,” he said.

This year’s festival will take place from December 5 to the 7.

Israel said he was looking forward to the awards ceremony taking place in December.

Local rapper and producer Lutho Siyo who has worked with Buck Matyila said he was proud of him and the work he was doing for the hip-hop movement.

Siyo and two other rappers; Caps and Slujah recently did a song about Matyila. “He is pushing the movement cause and I hope he brings the title home,” Siyo said.

PE rapper Ifani has been nominated for the hustler of the year category.

He was nominated alongside Cassper Nyovest, Monde Dube and DJ Naves. Ifani was nominated again for best collaboration with Psyfo for their song, Umtu Wam.

The awards ceremony will take place on December 17 at The Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City in Johannesburg. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
