Black Motion ready to dominate season

Deep house duo Black Motion is ready to take over the festive season with the release of their third album, Fortune Teller.

Black Motion is made up of Thabo Mabogwane and Bongani Mohosana. The two started off as dancers and later started making their own music to dance to.

They had their major break in 2010 when their smash hit single, Banana Mavoko made it onto DJ Oskido’s 10th Commandment compilation.

Mabogwane said they went on to record more songs and ultimately released their debut album, Talking to the Drums early 2011.

Mohosana, also known as DJ Murdah, said their first album was about branding Black Motion and getting their music out there.

“The second album, Aquarian Drums, was about learning more about the music industry and now Fortune Teller tells our whole journey and growth,” he said.

The duo were in East London yesterday for their promotional album tour. Mohosana also added that their latest album was a mature sound but still had their famous drum played by Mabogwane.

Within a couple of years of making music, Black Motion has made a debut in other African countries and around the world.

They have been part of the Winter Music Conference in Miami as part of the South African invasion.

Some of their highlights include the Spring Explosion in Botswana, shows in Canada, several trips to Angola, London, Lesotho supporting Black Coffee’s game-changing Africa Rising concert.

Mohosana said everywhere they went people showed them love and danced to their music.

“Our music is not for a particular race, we want everyone to join in the fun,” he said.

Mohasana said some of their sound had influences from the other countries they have visited.

“We also learn a thing or two when we are away.”

On their latest album released last month, Black Motion has worked with internationally renown DJ Black Coffee, Kwela Tebza, Xoli M and East London singer Berita.

Mabogwane said they have not strayed from their dancing roots. “We always try to give people the full experience while we are on stage,” he said.

Their new music video for Rainbow featuring Xoli M will be making its debut tomorrow on SABC1’s Live AMP show at 9pm. The duo is expected to play at the Motsepe Foundation party due to take place in East London later this month.

In December, they will be playing in Port Elizabeth at Heavy K’s birthday celebrations. Their album is available at all music stores and on iTunes. —poliswap@dispatch.co.za
