ANC Youth League must account to the top brass

The two Eastern Cape ANCYL structures, elected during the chaotic provincial conference, have been called to a meeting in Johannesburg.

The youth league’s national task team (NTT) will hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss the upcoming national conference, which will be held at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto campus next week.

The provincial structure is divided into two groups. One is being led by Nelson Mandela Bay Metro-based Sicelo Mleve as its chairman and Ndumiso Sapepa as the secretary. The group held its first provincial executive meeting this weekend.

The other group is led by Butsha Lali as provincial secretary and Nathi Nqoko as chairman.

ANCYL NTT spokesman Bandile Masuku, who last week said they recognised Lali and Nqoko’s group as the legitimate structure, confirmed inviting both groups to explain what happened.

Sapepa confirmed to the Daily Dispatch that he and Mleve had been invited to the NTT meeting.

Sapepa added that the meeting also discussed how the league is going to revive itself and instill party discipline.

Lali also confirmed that his group has been invited to the Johannesburg meeting. The group held their provincial executive committee meeting on Saturday where they elected a provincial working committee and deployment to regions.

Lali said they are also busy with a delegation for next week’s national conference.

The Eastern Cape ANCYL held an elective conference two weeks ago, which turned violent and saw delegates being hospitalised.

One faction left the venue and elected a parallel executive while Nokuthula Mbesa presided.

The two groups are divided on who they support for the leadership of the league. Lali and Nqoko’s group are supporting NTT coordinator Magasela Mzobe for president and Mawethu Rune as general secretary.

Sapepa and Mleve are in support of ANC national executive committee (NEC) member Pule Mabe for president despite him facing multiple charges of corruption.

Mabe, who is a former treasurer of the league, was arrested and charged earlier this year alongside former spokesman of the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa), Paseka Letsatsi, and Surprise Ramosa for allegedly defrauding the agency.

In September, about R2.2-million worth of assets belonging to Mabe and his co-accused were seized by the National Prosecuting Authority’s asset forfeiture unit after it was granted a freezing order by the Pretoria High Court.

Former youth league’s deputy president Ronald Lamola is also vying for the league’s presidency. — mphumziz@dispatch.co.za
