Video: Naima set to groove at party

LELILANGA hit-maker Naima Kay will perform some of her latest tracks from her new album Ngiyavuma when she performs today  at the Motsepe Foundation party.

Naima Kay, real name Lungile Khumalo, made her debut in the music industry last year with the release of her album Umsebenzi.

Her single Lelilanga from the album became an instant hit. The song, which means ‘This day belongs to me’ saw her win the best newcomer at this year’s South African Music Awards.

Speaking to the Saturday Dispatch ahead of her performance today, Naima Kay said she was thankful to God for her journey and growth in the music business.

“I have never imagined that I would win an award or even record two albums. I am thankful to God for all that he has done for me,” she said.

The Durban-based musician said she had worked with the likes of Robbie Malinga, Scelo Gowane and DJ Sbu on her latest album.

“Unlike my first album, I’ve featured more than one person this time around. I still have the same producers, Robbie and Mojalefa Thebe,” she said.

On the album, she has a song called Gogo for her 83-year-old grandmother. “She called me this week after hearing the album for the first time and she was crying. I love my grandmother. She is my everything and I am what I am because of her,” she said. She said her grandmother’s strong Christian values have kept her grounded and her music often reflected her heart and passion for God.

“People who loved Lelilanga will enjoy this album, there is something to dance to and songs that connect one to God,” she said.

The shy 23-year-old said she could not wait to perform some of her new and old music today. “I was one of the artists that performed at last year’s Christmas with the people event and we had so much fun. I cannot wait to do that again tomorrow. It is always such an honour to celebrate with the people that have supported me,” she said.

The Afro-jazz musician has also made it to the line-up of next year’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

“I thought I would perform at this year’s festival but that didn’t happen. When they approached me again this year for 2015 I knew that I am supposed to perform there. I cannot wait to share on such a big stage with many artists,” she said.

Other artists who will be performing today include Professor, DJ Sbu, Heavy Kay, Oskido, Sphe and Naves.

Buffalo City Metro spokesman Thandy Matebese said the city was ready to host the Motsepe Foundation event. “We have been doing this for years now and last year we had an incident-free event. Our city police will be there to ensure that there are no incidents again this year,” he said.

Matebese said they would not let the event go on for long in the afternoon. “The party starts at 10am and by 6pm it will be done.” The free event takes place at the Esplanade today. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
