EL’s festive spirit ignited

East London was abuzz with summer activity at the weekend. Buffalo City Metro (BCM) switched on the festive season lights, the Cruel Summer Picnic party was on, the inaugural 360 Art in the Park took place and the Premier’s Traditional Horse Racing Handicap had enthusiasts entertained.

Three municipal venues came alive as BCM celebrated switching on the lights from Friday until last night.

The lights went on along with a firework display at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane on Friday.

A similar event took place at the Esplanade on Saturday, with the last celebration in King William’s Town yesterday.

BCM spokesman Thandy Matebese said the events were incident free.

“ went well, were even bigger than last year,” he said.

Five thousand young people gathered at the Cambridge Police Park for the annual Cruel Summer Picnic.

The event saw traffic slowdown on Western Avenue.

Kwaito group Big Nuz and hot DJs such as Groove Afrika, House Natives, Cooley S and Young Reezy had the young revellers on their feet.

Organisers said support for the summer soiree was much better than when the event first started three years ago.

The coordinator of the first 360 Art in the Park, Sharon Farr, said: “We received a lot of positive feedback from people. Some were even asking us to make it a quarterly event, while one lady wanted us to host a similar event every weekend.”

The event took place at the Ann Bryant Art Gallery and saw residents being treated to live entertainment, food and fine art.

Farr said stall operators were pleased with their sales.

“We managed to get some things right, but others will need special attention next time. This has been a learning curve for us and we will grow from all of this,” she said.

The weekend, meanwhile, also marked the start of the festive season – there are many events planned until December 31.

Renowned DJ Black Coffee is expected to play in the city this week.

The Head Honcho Summer Picnic and Fun Day are planned for this weekend and will feature PH, Nomuzi, Mgarimbe, rapper KO and other local artists. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
