The Rockets back to wow their fans

After a successful performance in the city earlier this year, Cape Town’s number one R&B/pop band The Rockets will perform for one night only at the Johnnie Walker Jazzy Sunday event.

The band – with more than 20 years’ experience in the music industry – were in East London in October to launch their 26th album titled Sizzling Summer Mixes.

Group leader Jerry Watt said the upcoming show, to be held at Tonga nightclub, was a “spin-off” of the performances they gave annually at the Guild Theatre.

“East London is our home, the Rockets are a household name here but people have always asked us why we always give shows at sit- down venues,” he said.

“So when we were approached about giving a performance at a nightclub we jumped at the chance because our fans will now get a chance to sing and dance.”

Watt said even though the venue was a nightclub, the show would still be family friendly. “The show starts quite early so even though we might attract a new type of crowd, our fans won’t be deterred by the venue,” he said.

The Rockets have been around for more than 20 years performing at prestigious music events across the country including The Jazzathon, The Richtersveld Celebrations, The Staying Alive Aids Concert filmed by MTV, and recently in the KKNK festival in Oudtshoorn. They have two SA Music Awards under their belts in the best pop performance and best contemporary dance performance categories.

Watt said the band was currently touring the country promoting their latest album titled Sizzling Summer Mixes 2. “We have just returned from the Namaqualand and before we hit East London we’ll be in Port Elizabeth, then after all that we go back to Johannesburg, so this is really a busy time of the year for us.

The Rockets perform live at Tonga from 7pm on Sunday. Presold tickets cost R100, or R120 at the door. – ziphon@dispatch.co.za
