Video: Concerts to promote and provide jobs for top artists

Music lovers are in for a treat when the Eastern Cape Music concert series kicks off on Sunday at the Velvet Jazz Lounge.

The concert is an initiative of the Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre Records, in partnership with the University of Fort Hare and department of sport, recreation, arts and culture (DSRAC).

ECAVC director Sy Ntuli said the series, which will see local and national artists sharing the stage, was aimed at creating jobs for Eastern Cape-based artists.

“The series will be held monthly and will also provide a platform for established and rising stars to share the stage.”

Ntuli said music lovers could look forward to performances ranging from afro-soul, jazz and gospel sounds. The launch of the concert will feature the multi-award winning and platinum selling singer Siphokazi Mohapi.

Many will remember Mohapi for her popular song Amacala. The Lusikisiki-born singer is working on the final stages of her new album.

Ntuli said Mohapi would be supported by folk singer Asanda “Msaki” Mvana, who is working on her debut album due for release next year.

Msaki has an extended play (EP) out titled Nal’ ithemba. Also featured on the night will be Thandokazi, whose debut album Imvelaphi was released under the provincial record label.

“The aim of this venture is to create jobs and foster a sustainable livelihood through a constant work schedule for the province-based artists while also promoting social cohesion,” Ntuli said.

Ntuli said they would also form resident bands that would accompany visiting artists to help boost their own profiles.

“This will provide a space for these established acts to take part in music development, knowledge exchange and learning exercises in the form of master classes and info-sharing sessions,” Ntuli said.

He said the centre was also looking at providing mentorship for aspiring music managers and promoters.

“Those interested in the programme can get application forms at ECAVC and all DSRAC offices in the province. Artists in and around Port Elizabeth can collect and submit forms at the Opera House,” he said.

ECAVC’s Sisa Sopazi said they were considering taking the series to other parts of the province.

In East London, Velvet Jazz Lounge would be their spot for the next couple of months. Ntuli said the concert series was supported by the University of Fort Hare, DSRAC and other sponsors.

Ntuli said tickets for the show cost R100 and could be booked at 043-703-7544 or 043-722-1076. Doors open at 6.30pm on Sunday. —poliswap@dispatch.co.za
