Hip-hop picks up beat in city

South African hip-hop music heavyweights AKA and Da LES will be in East London on Monday to wow fans at the inaugural Hip-Hop Extravaganza event.

The event is the brainchild of Star of Azania, an organisation aiming to stimulate local economies using music.

Athi Lupondwana of Star of Azania said this event sought to bring together different elements of hip-hop and, in doing so, to bring together youth from all different walks of life.

“Hip-hop is a growing music and cultural phenomenon particularly among the ‘born frees’,” said Lupondwana.

He said East London has been touted as the hip-hop capital of the province, followed by Port Elizabeth.

He said Sama-winning rapper AKA and Da LES are gearing up to put on a powerhouse performance at East London’s Incognito Nightclub on the day. They will be joined by rising star Blaqphamas, from East London, and other sensational artists.

AKA takes the lead with a total of 11 nods for several categories including album of the year, producer of the year, song of the year, best collaboration and most valuable artist. The Sama-winning artist had a great year with hits like Run Jozi, Congratulate and All Eyes On Me from his sophomore album, Levels.

Lupondwana said they would be supported by well-known local artists such as DJ PH and rapper Blaqphamas.

Lupondwana said AKA and Da LES will arrive on Monday in order to promote themselves around town ahead of their show.

“They’ll be at Vincent Park Shopping Centre for a meet and greet with their fans and CD signing. They’ll be doing the same after that at the Mdantsane Highway taxi rank,” he said.

Tickets are priced at between R120 (unreserved seating) and R550 (VVIP, includes bottle of whiskey) and are available through Computicket.

The doors open at 8pm with the first performance at 9pm. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
