Buyel’Ekhaya set to be a big draw

The Buyel’Ekhaya, which draws thousands of music lovers each year, will again bring some of the best acts to East London this weekend.

The festival, now in its sixth year, will see artists such as The Soil, Mtukudzi, Zahara and Berita performing live at Buffalo Park cricket stadium on Sunday.

One of the organisers, Osa Mazwai, said the festival had something for everyone from veterans to dance-floor favourites such as Uhuru, Mafikizolo, DJ Tira and DJ Ganyani.

“We also have the legendary Papa Wemba as one of the performing artists.”

Wemba is a world-renowned Congolese rumba musician.

Since its formation in 2009, the festival has grown and become one of the most-talked-about events of the festive season.

“We began as a purely South African music festival but we’ve since expanded and included other African artists in our line-up.

“We have had the likes of Ndingo Johwa, Salif Keita and Angelique Kidjo as our headliners,” Mazwai said.

In its first year, Buyel’Ekhaya attracted close to 5000 people. Last year, the number rose to about 22000.

Mazwai said in keeping with their commitment to developing local talent they had also included a range of emerging artists to perform on the day.

Local artists featured include Csana from Port St Johns, Afro soul and jazz singer Thandokazi from Mthatha, Simphiwe “PS” Peter from King William’s Town, Andile Seskhona from Mdantsane and kwaito star Super from Duncan Village.

He said Buyel’Ekhaya would also celebrate 20 years of freedom in a special way.

“We will feature a tribute to superstar Brenda Fassie, originally from the small Eastern Cape town of Indwe.

“The performance is also a loving salute to women’s resilience in the music industry in the 20 years as personified in the line-up led by Swazi Dlamini, Zahara and Berita,” he said.

He said tickets were available at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers at R180. “Cooler boxes and picnic baskets will be charged at R50 per person. All those attending the festival should note that for security reasons there will be no pass-outs.” — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
