Province’s ANC to bus supporters to CT rally

The Eastern Cape ANC will bus 10000 members and supporters from the province to attend the party’s 103rd anniversary celebrations in Cape Town this weekend.

A crowd of more than 50000 ANC members and supporters, as well as 2500 guests and diplomats, are expected to attend the rally to be held at the Cape Town stadium on Saturday.

ANC president Jacob Zuma and his deputy Cyril Ramaphosa arrived in the city on Sunday.

Zuma is scheduled to do walkabouts in townships such as Langa and will also be at Phillipi, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Mitchells Plain until Thursday.

The campaign is aimed at mustering support for the party in the DA-led province.

Ramaphosa, national ANC chairwoman Baleka Mbete and secretary-general Gwede Mantashe will undertake various mobilisation activities including walkabouts, public meetings and door-to-door campaigning around the Cape Town metro, West Coast and Boland regions as a buildup to the Saturday rally.

Eastern Cape ANC secretary Oscar Mabuyane said the party had identified the Eastern Cape as one of the main crowd pullers for the rally due to its close proximity to the Western Cape.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro region has been tasked with recruiting up to 2500 ANC members and supporters.

The second biggest delegation will be from Sarah Baartman – the region that includes Grahamstown, Port Alfred and Cradock – with about 2300 supporters.

Buffalo City region will also be one of the crowd pullers as it has planned to send 1600 ANC supporters to the rally, while Amathole and Chris Hani regions will each bus 1000 supporters to Cape Town, Mabuyane confirmed yesterday.

“Our plan is to use the closest ANC regions to the Western Cape to send more people than the regions which are further east,” he said.

“That is why Joe Gqabi will only bus 500 members and Alfred Nzo will send only 200, while OR Tambo, even though it’s the biggest ANC region, will only transport 800 people.”

The supporters are scheduled to leave on Friday afternoon and will be dropped off at the stadium on Saturday morning.

“We expect the rally to be over by noon, meaning our supporters will have enough time to relax before being bused back to the province on Saturday afternoon. There is no sleeping over.

“Our planning is such that everyone will be able to be back home by Monday morning and continue with their daily programmes back home,” Mabuyane added. — zineg@dispatch.co.za
