Popular reality show Big Brother Mzansi returns to the small screen after a successful season last year.

The reality show involves 24-hour camera surveillance of interactions between strangers living in a house, shut off from the outside world.

A carefully selected 16 people start off in the show and each week, numbers are cut down as contestants are voted off by viewers until the top six remain.

The winner of a R1-million cash prize is then selected from the six.

The reality show is similar to Big Brother South Africa, which aired its first season in 2001. Season two followed in 2002. Last year Big Brother Mzansi made its debut.

Johannesburg spaza shop owner Mandla Hlatshwayo was announced winner on April 6 and walked out of the Big Brother house R1-million richer. He shocked the nation when he had unprotected sex during the show with Lexi Niekerk. Niekerk was evicted from the 63-day reality show after 56 days in the house.

One of the 16 housemates was Aliwal North-born Thando Hlwatika, 23, evicted after 49 days.

M-Net director of local interest channels Nkateko Mabaso said those who believed they were bold, brave, smart and savvy enough should audition.

“Big Brother Mzansi allows us as a channel to tap our audience’s engagement – specifically in the social networking space. It’s a double-win for our viewers – great viewing today drives great viewing in the future,” he said, adding that the show was packed with action, drama, romance and humour.

Mabaso said those wanting to join must be South African citizens over the age of 21. This year’s grand prize is again R1-million.

Auditions take place simultaneously in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg from January 31 to February 1. In Durban they are at the Bat Centre, in Johannesburg at The Pyramid Venue and in Cape Town at the Cape Town Lodge.

Mabaso said people could audition as individuals or with a partner.

“A person can pair up with a brother, sister, cousin, neighbour, gym partner, boyfriend or girlfriend. It doesn’t matter as long they meet the entry requirements.”

Season two starts on March 29 and runs for 56 days. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
