East London’s most talented performers will tonight resurrect the spirit of the Spanish empire when they perform a Valentine’s cabaret.

Every year the Arts Theatre selects a new theme for its annual cabaret. This year’s production, The Secret Rose, celebrates the vibrant Spanish culture, from Spain to South America.

The production will take the audience on a journey from Seville in Spain, the home of flamenco to the tango capital of the world – Buenos Aires.

Production director Amanda Bothma said she was pleased with how everything had come together before the opening night.

“Merrylise did a spectacular job on the costumes. The show is lovely, it’s bright. Vicky and Germaine both did an amazing job in the choreography and music,” she said.

Last year the theatre hosted auditions for locals wanting to take part in the show. Music director Germaine Gamiet said they have had the honour of working with well-known East London talent in the production.

“We also have some new talent that we will be introducing tonight,” Gamiet said.

The productions runs from tonight until February 21. Eight of the nine shows have been sold to various charities around the city.

“We always try and support charities. Each charity will be responsible for selling tickets for their own show,” he said.

The first show tonight belongs to the theatre.

The cast of the production features well-known performers such as Cindy Bester, Christine van Zyl, Jonathan Buitendag, Kerry Hiles, Marietjie Jordaan, Megan Rhoda, Nathan Johannisen, Pieter van Zyl, Shannon Welgemoed, Tracey Maaske, Vicky Luff, Ramon Chetty and Xandre Groenewald.

“This is a show with a Spanish twist – it celebrates life, love and romance through song and dance,” said Bothma.
