A new e.tv drama series featuring the industry’s best promises to give SABC1’s Generations Legacy some competition during the 8pm time slot.
The show, Ashes to Ashes, revealed its top-rated cast last night in Johannesburg.
Some of the leading actors on the show include former Generations stars Nambitha Mpumlwana, who played Mawande Memela; Patrick Shai, who played Patrick; Zenande Mfenyana, who played Noluntu Memela; and Maggie Benedict, who played Akhona. Other leading actors include Chumani Pan, Nyaniso Dzedze and Mandla Gaduka.
Ashes to Ashes is set against the backdrop of a family-owned funeral business in Tembisa. Namane Funerals is a highly prosperous business owned by a husband and wife, who inherited the business. The Namane couple is played by Mpumlwana and Shai. Helping Namane run the business are his two sons played by Pan and Dzedze.
Similar to other family structures, there are personalities that tend to derail from the legacy penned for the family in the series.
The head of the family has incredibly challenging addictions that may ruin the future that they have collectively worked hard for. To add to this demise, the family still faces the threat of an estranged family member and a dark secret.
The free-to air channel’s division managing director Monde Twala said e.tv was pleased to be able to offer their viewers an alternative in the 8pm time slot. “Our ongoing investment in local content continues to mirror authentic storytelling that showcases South African culture and day-to-day life,” he said.
Twala said a lot of work had gone into ensuring that the new telenovela added value to the overall growth of the industry. “We have ambitious hopes for this project. The relationships and intrigue will captivate, and entertain viewers across the country,” he said.
Mpumlwana and Shai, who play the patriarch and matriarch of the Namane family, said they were excited to be part of the production.
“The story is new and fresh, the characters are well-written and working in a highly professional environment makes it all worthwhile.
This is our debut on e.tv screens and we hope that our fans and supporters will enjoy our latest offering,” Mpumlwana said.
Mooiplaas-born actor, Pan, who is also no stranger on local television, said he was more nervous than excited about the show.
“The actors on this show are amazing. They are complemented by a great crew. There is mutual respect for everyone and most of the people are already established and we know each other’s work,” he said.
He added that they hoped the show would become the most watched at 8pm. Ashes to Ashes will make its debut on e.tv on March 2. The drama series will play from Monday to Thursday.
