A marriage of words and sounds will come to life this Friday when “The Ha!man” comes to East London.

The Ha!man – real name Francois le Roux – is a South African cellist who has made a name for himself nationally and internationally.

Le Roux has recorded a number of albums, gives workshops on creativity and writes on human issues.

Speaking with the Daily Dispatch yesterday, he said he was looking forward to his performance at the Arts Theatre on Friday.

During his visit to the metro he will visit two schools to give performances. “I will also be doing a seminar at the University of Fort Hare music department.”

Le Roux is accompanied by writer and actress Joke Debaere, who has been performing with him since 2012.

He said their performance featured a piano/keyboard, flute and a lot of body movement.

Although their performances are never planned, he said they followed a broad narrative that proceeded from the mystical, moving to the expressive and ultimately to homecoming interactive items.

“There is going to be cello, keyboard and a whole bunch of electronic accompaniments. We will have visual projections of some of the music.

“That visual material comes from all parts of the world,” he said adding that the programme was in three parts.

“The first part is going to be more reflective music. The second is more energetic and instrumental.

“The last one brings everything together and the audience is urged to participate,” he said.

Le Roux’s love for music dates back to when he was a church organist at the age of 10. Since then he has appeared as a soloist with orchestras, both on cello and piano.

During the 1990s he travelled around the country performing on the streets and experimenting with other art forms such as writing, drawing, dance and acting.

Next month he will go to Europe, touring Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, United Kingdom, France and the Mediterranean.

His second tour for the year will start in July.

On Thursday and Friday this week, he said he will be doing school performances at Lilyfontein School and Clarendon High School.
