East London police arrested more than 100 people in connection with crimes ranging from murder and rape to drinking in public over the weekend.

Police spokesman Captain Stephen Marais said the arrests were made in Duncan Village, Buffalo Flats, Gonubie, Beacon Bay, Tsholomnqa and Kidds Beach.

“Crimes that the suspects were arrested for, include rape, attempted murder, housebreaking and theft, drunken driving, possession of drugs, contravention of protection orders and drinking in public,” Marais said.

He said community patrol groups from various communities had helped.

Suspects would appear in the East London Magistrates Court soon to face their respective charges, Marais said.

Police in Dutywa closed down three shebeens on Friday evening. The liquor spots were located in Colosa, Sinqumeni and Poswa villages.

Owners were each fined R250 for not possessing liquor licences and their alcohol was confiscated to be destroyed.

Two Rastafarian men aged 39 and 47 were arrested early yesterday morning near Butterworth for allegedly growing about 200 dagga plants. Police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said they were arrested in Lusizi Location, Cebe Village, in Centane. He said police intelligence led to the arrests.

“Both were arrested in their house with two bags of dagga weighing 8kg with a street value of R8000.

“Police also uprooted almost 200 dagga plants from the garden of the suspects. Both suspects have been charged with possession of dagga and the cultivation of dagga,” he said.

They are due to appear before the Centane Magistrate’s Court today.

In a separate matter, Manatha said a youth of 21 accused of raping a

59-year-old relative last January, was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in jail by the Willowvale Regional Magistrate’s Court last week.

Eight years were suspended for a period of five years on condition that the accused is not found guilty of an offence involving violence during the period of suspension.

He said “the victim was coming back from visiting her family members when she came across the .

“The attacked the victim and severely assaulted her. He then raped her and dumped her in the river,” Manatha said.
