Science teacher one of SA’s best

Teaching physical science with no laboratory or equipment did not stop a Reeston teacher from being named second-best science teacher in the country.

De la Cornillere-Schutte said her inspiration for wanting to win the award was in an effort to show the world that teaching Grade R is just as important as teaching any other grade.

“Many people see Grade R as unimportant because it’s a baby class but they don’t realise that this is probably the most important class because it boosts their early development, which may set the tone for the rest of their lives,” De la Cornillere-Schutte said.

“Another reason I wanted to win is because there is also the perception that the Eastern Cape produces such poor teachers.

“But that paints all teachers with the same brush, which is not really accurate.

“There are some great teachers who produce wonderful kids and who are really dedicated to their work.”

The Daily Dispatch was unable to reach Langa and Wynford at the time of writing yesterday.

Other categories included special needs and inclusive teaching, excellence in primary school teaching and a lifetime achievement award.

Prizes included cash for all categories as well as tablets, cellphones and double return airline tickets to domestic destinations. But best of all, the winners in the top eight categories drove away in brand new Chevrolet Sparks. — zisandan@dispatch.co.za
