‘Scandal’ actress sets sights on top awards

With only two weeks left before the Royalty Soapie Awards (RSA) take place, Scandal’s Masasa Mbangeni hopes to be crowned this year’s leading actress.

Mbangeni is also in line for another leading actress award at this year’s SA Film and Television Awards taking place next week.

The Royalty Soapie Awards, which is in its second year, are supported by the KwaZulu-Natal department of arts and culture, Ukhozi FM, Mzansi Magic and SMG BMW.

The awards recognise the accomplishments of local soapies.

The Port Elizabeth-born actress said she was humbled by both nominations.

“It’s my birthday month. Winning something would mean a lot to me but I am still honoured by the nominations alone. To know that my work is being acknowledged is a big thing for me,” she said.

At the Royalty Awards, Mbangeni has been nominated alongside Scandal’s Gloria Rangaka, Isidingo’s Kgomotso Christopher, Isibaya’s Thembi Nyandeni and 7de Laan’s Vinette Ebrahim.

The most nominated soapies at this year’s RSA were Scandal, Isibaya and 7de Laan. SABC 1’s Generations – The Legacy did not fall within the timeframe to be eligible to participate.

“It would be great if I win but if I don’t, it’s fine. I am excited and happy about this.”

On the show, Mbangeni plays the role of Thandeka. Although she started as an extra, her character has now become one of the most dominating on the show.

“It is a blessing for me to have one of the leading roles on Scandal. The way my character has grown in the soapie just shows God’s greatness and how he always gives us things, the desires of our hearts and things that we never imagined,” Mbangeni said.

She said her love for acting started at the age of nine.

“I started attending drama classes from a young age and I would take part in school plays throughout my primary and high school life,” she said.
