Senseless killing shocks Pefferville

The family of a father of seven who was shot and killed in front of his son has called on anyone who might have information to come forward and assist the police.

The death of 52-year-old Sebenzile Sogwangqana, who was on his way to work at Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) when he was shot, has shocked residents of Pefferville.

Songwangqana was with his 22-year-old son, Luyanda, and three female colleagues – all MBSA employees – when they were accosted by three suspects at 5am on Sunday.

Luyanda said they had noticed the three men while on their way to work.

“They initially passed by us when we were waiting for one of the ladies we walk to work with. One of them showed off his gun but they passed us,” he said.

The five workers then walked on, but were later confronted by the men.

“They demanded cellphones but before we could even hand them over, one of the men pointed a gun at my father.”

Luyanda said his father tried to flee but was fatally shot in the back.

The traumatised son said his father’s last words to him were: “They have finished me.”

The suspects ran off without taking anything.

“I did not even run when they fired the shot. It was one shot and it killed him. My colleagues ran away. I was so shocked and was left alone.

“I reached out to him and he said his last words. I took his phone and called my uncle.”

Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala confirmed that no valuables had been taken from the victim. She said police were investigating a murder case.

No arrests have been made yet. Sogwangqana’s wife Noyawatele yesterday said she was devastated by the news.

Residents were shocked when the police cordoned off the crime scene.

“This has really affected me. I don’t know why it had to happen in front of me, I’m devastated,” said Lyanda.

“I could not stop thinking about it yesterday and I hope it will get better with time.” — mamelag@dispatch.co.za
