MEC Majodina must go‚ says COPE

The Congress of the People has called for the sacking of Pemmy Majodina for “the flagrant abuse of taxpayers’ money”.

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela this week released a report urging Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masaulle to take action against Majodina‚ who is now the MEC for sports‚ arts‚ culture‚ sports and recreation.

The “misappropriation of state funds” relates to a five-day trip Majodina – then MEC for social development – took to the US in September 2012‚ during which she spent R3000 a day on lunch.

“After reading the public protector’s report on her being paid R150500 too much and refusing to pay back that amount‚ he has no alternative but to act decisively against her‚” said COPE spokesperson Dennis Bloem.

“She has sullied the reputation of the Eastern Cape government and the ANC as well.”

According to Bloem‚ Samson Kwelita‚ who was then a COPE MPL‚ requested an investigation after the Daily Dispatch exposed Majodina for abusing the privilege of office in 2012.

“COPE insists that the premier fires her at once. She must go. Behaviour as disgraceful as hers requires optimal censure‚” said Bloem.
