Afrikaans group DJ Ossewa is back by popular demand and will be performing in East London this weekend.

The three-man band will be playing at the Boeretroos Theatre tomorrow from 8pm. The group is made up of Daniel Jakobus, Vet Frik and Jerbes die Leeuboer.

They started off with four guys but in 2010 one of the members, Dwayne Venter, affectionately known as Raapie Knaapie, died in a car accident.

The band has been playing for the past 10 years and has released nine albums, including Boeresports, Voor op die wa, Vannie os oppie jas, Die Klap Mixes, Innie Lang Gras, Nuwe CD, Geraas oppi plaas and Briljantjie.

Their Nuwe CD, recorded while Venter was still alive, won a Huisgenoot Tempo Award in 2011.

Jerbes die Leeuboer, real name Jerbes de Bruyn, said the group was looking forward to returning to the city after last year’s show.

“In all the cities we visit people love our music but we have a special place in our hearts for the coast.

“The people who come out to see our shows in East London are mainly English-speaking but they still come out to support us,” he said.

He said they would also perform in Jeffreys Bay.

“This is more of a coastal tour we are doing. We just want to share our music with our supporters at the coast,” he said.

De Bruyn said their music pulled at the heartstrings but also raised a good deal of laughter. Their unique way of doing shows has made DJ Ossewa one of the great success stories of ‘sokkie’ music.

“What makes us different is the comedy in our shows. We mix it together with some rock beats and we interact with the crowd as well.

“After two songs in our show, people are able to forget their problems and have a good time. The show has a lot of energy,” he said.

“People should expect to see an energetic show with some of our old music and news songs. We want people to relax and forget about their daily responsibilities for a few hours,” said De Bruyn.

lThe theatre is situated at Evergreen Park on the old Gonubie to Beacon Bay road. Tickets cost R100 and can be booked by phoning Lara on 072-225-7120. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
