Former DA parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko will not run for the party’s highest office, she said in a statement this morning.

She said she remained committed to the DA as “the only organisation that can lead South Africa to a prosperous future”.

“When the time is right I will make myself available for whichever position I believe will enable me to best make a contribution towards building a better South Africa. That time, however, is not now,” said Mazibuko.

She made the statements as reports revealed that some liberal leaders in the party were speaking to her to return from Harvard, where she is studying until May 29. They wanted her to contest for the position of leader, following Helen Zille’s announcement yesterday that she would stand down at the upcoming party’s national congress.

Mazibuko said: “Zille has led the DA with courage and distinction over the past eight years. Under her leadership our support has grown steadily … to a force in South African politics, which now enjoys the support of nearly one in every four voters.”

Zille achieved that under often “unbearably strenuous circumstances”, she said.

She wished the candidates well in the party’s upcoming leadership campaign and election.
