Beatenberg beat Nyovest at SAMAs

In a surprise twist for many, Cape Town pop trio Beatenberg walked away with seven awards at the SA music awards.

Those betting on hip hop darling Cassper Nyovest, who had five nominations, would have regretted their investment as it was Beatenberg who swept away album of the year at the South African Music Awards on Sunday night.

Nyovest managed only best newcomer of the year award.

Beatenberg also walked away with the title of group of the year and best pop album, beating fellow Capetonian Jimmy Nevis and pop group Monark.

During the non-broadcast component of the show, the group also won best-selling ring-back tone and best-selling full-track download, and also received the SA Music Performance Rights Association award for highest airplay of the year with their smash Pluto, which features DJ Clock.

The 21st year of the prestigious awards ceremony at the Sun City Superbowl saw music acts from all corners walking the red carpet in weird and wonderful ensembles.

The hotly contested rap album of the year award went to K.O for Skhanda Republic. The rapper took home the best collaboration award.

Despite the on and off rivalry between Nyovest and fellow hip hop artist AKA, once again Nyovest lost out and it was AKA who got the nod for male artist of the year.

Bucie Nqwiliso won female artist of the year.

Black Motion clinched the best dance album honours. Remix of the year award went to DJ Sbu, Robbie Malinga and Mojalefa Thebe.

Afrotraction took best R&B, soul and reggae album category.

Thokozani Langa won best maskandi album, and Sifiso Ncwane best traditional faith music album.

The industry acknowledged Zim Ngqawana, Mdu Masilela and Mandla “Spikiri” Mofokeng for lifetime achievement awards.

Other winners of the night included:
