The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has blamed the current xenophobic attacks on the African National Congress (ANC).
At a briefing during the Numsa central executive committee meeting‚ general secretary Irvin Jim said the meeting had identified the source of the spread of attacks on foreign nationals across the country.
“The fundamental truth must be recognised. It is the failure of the ANC/SACP government to radically implement the Freedom Charter and thereby make fundamental changes to the economy and transform the lives of all South Africans that is at the heart of xenophobia and its violence‚” Jim told reporters in Newtown on Thursday.
Over the past three weeks‚ South Africa has been struggling to contain xenophobic attacks‚ which began in KwaZulu-Natal and spread to various parts of the country‚ with Gauteng the hardest hit.
The government has since deployed the SA National Defence Force to help the police restore order and stem the spread of the attacks.
The Numsa executive committee also added its voice to the call to end the xenophobic attacks‚ and urged all South African communities to welcome back foreign nationals who have been displaced due to the violence. — The Times
