Trio in court for the killing of Eastern Cape couple

Three men appeared in a packed Mthatha magistrate’s court this morning for the murder of a young couple.

Mkhululi Luwaca and Bongani Depana‚ both aged 22‚ and 19-year-old Andiphile Mhlophe were each formally charged with six counts relating to the murder of Carl George and Jacqueline Miller‚ both 20. Their bodies were found dumped in the Mthatha dam earlier this week.

Each of the suspects faces two counts of murder‚ two kidnapping charges‚ assault and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

There were rumblings in the gallery packed with relatives‚ friends and community members as lawyer Simphiwe Pata of Tiya-Pata Attorneys argued for his clients to be released on R1‚000 bail.

Magistrate Anele Maqolo concurred with prosecutor Tembisa Ntloko for the suspects to be remanded in custody pending further investigation.

The case was postponed till May 26 for a formal bail hearing. They were not asked to plead.
