COSATU Eastern Cape chairman David Toyise has been unanimously re-elected provincial chair of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU).

The union held its 11th provincial elective congress over two days last week, under the theme “advancing the unity of the working class struggle”.

Toyise was uncontested in his endeavour to lead the municipal workers’ union in the province, with Lebo Mangxe of the OR Tambo region elected his deputy.

Mangxe defeated outgoing chairman Mxolisi Qina of Chris Hani district for the deputy position, which was previously occupied by Buffalo City Metro’s William Sincayi. Sincayi is rumoured to be destined for the union’s national office.

Qina’s comrade from Chris Hani district, Milton Myolwa, was elected provincial secretary.

Myolwa will now take over from Siphiwo Ndunyana, who left the union’s provincial leadership position earlier this year after his provincial executive was disbanded by Samwu’s national leadership and placed under administration.

Myolwa’s deputy will be Vuyokazi Daniel from the OR Tambo district while BCM’s Sithiwe Mali is now the union’s provincial treasurer.

Attempts to get comment from Toyise and Myolwa proved fruitless yesterday as both their phones went straight to voicemail.

Samwu’s national media officer Papikie Mohale was also not available at the time of writing.

Meanwhile, the Young Communist League in the Buffalo City’s Skenjana Roji district also held their elective conference at the University of Fort Hare’s East London campus over the weekend.

Simbongile “Pitso” Gulwa was elected the district chair while Thulani Tempi was retained as the district secretary. Gulwa’s deputy will be Zandile Nonkonyana while Tempi’s deputy will be Nontsikelelo Nyamani.

The former students’ representative council president at the University of Fort Hare, Xolisa Faku, was elected district treasurer in preparation for the league’s elective provincial conference scheduled for December. — asandan@dispatch.co.za
