Arosi returns to wow Xhosa fans at home

Multi-talented musician Suthukaza Arosi, who returns to the studio after a 10-year hiatus from producing music, will be headlining the Eastern Cape Music Night concert.

The Cala-born singer will be performing at the Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre (ECAVC), formerly known as the Miriam Makeba centre, next week on Saturday.

Many will remember Arosi for songs such as Abelungu Abamnyama, Ubuntu and Wemnt’ omnyama vuka emaqandeni.

She made her debut in the music industry in the 1980s and has released seven albums.

Her last album, The Journey, was released in 2004.

Arosi, who is now based in Johannesburg, said she could not wait to perform for an Eastern Cape audience.

“I always get invited by kings to perform at their events. I never get booked for festivals – to be able to share my music with my Xhosa people is an honour.”

Despite being one of the most under-rated artists, Arosi said she would continue making music because it is her calling.

“I’ve asked myself why I don’t get invitations to perform at festivals like Buyel’ekhaya but I don’t have an answer for that.”

In 1997, Arosi was the first South African female singer to win a Kora Award for best Southern African Artist.

“I am one of the few who showed people it is okay to sing in your home language.

“I embraced my Xhosa roots and my music is deeply rooted in that,” she said.

Other awards she has won include the FNB Vita Award for best leading actress in The Game and South African Music Award (Sama) for best Xhosa album.

Her last album saw her getting a Sama nomination for best female artist.

Arosi has worked with well-known musicians such as Caiphus Semenya, Letta Mbulu, Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa and Miriam Makeba.

She is currently working on her upcoming album with Masekela and the team at ECAVC Records.

“You cannot rush music that brings healing to the people. My music is healing, educative and entertaining at the same time.

“I am not like other artists who rush into releasing music.

“Yes, it has taken me a while but I have been writing songs with my son.”

ECAVC marketing manager Sisa Sopazi said Arosi would be joined by Pu2ma and Csana.

“We are honoured to be hosting the legendary Suthukazi. Both Pu2ma and Csana have been mentored by her and we are happy they will be sharing the stage with her on the night,” he said.

lCatch Arosi, Pu2ma and Csana next week Saturday at the ECAVC auditorium. Tickets cost R100 for adults and R50 for students with student cards. Tickets are available from ECAVC. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
