East London rappers recently got the nod from a Cape Town-based clothing line to act as the brand’s ambassadors.

The Cloud9Records rappers were endorsed by One Man Jive to help promote the brand in Eastern Cape.

One Man Jive’s Yolisa Mlawuti said they had signed a deal with Cloud9Records’ founder Siyanda “Sizzle” Mdipha.

“Sizzle has a number of artists under his label and because of the relationship we have with him, we sponsor all of them. They tell us what they need and we provide it,” he said.

Artists under Mdipha’s label include Chuma “Charmz” Kobo, Bulelani “Vietnam” Tanana and Junia Roberts.

Many brands have used well-known people to act as their brand ambassadors.

Woolworths recently collaborated with Pharrell Williams. In 2010, Butan Wear, a South African urban lifestyle clothing brand that captures the fashion on the streets, announced rapper Kwesta as their ambassador.

The award winning rapper is still the brand’s ambassador.

Hit-maker DJ Mobi Dixon said it was a good move for clothing companies to use musicians to market their brands.

“From a business point of view it is a good idea because people always want to know what their favourite artists is wearing and where can they get it,” he said.

Dixon also has his own branded clothes he sells.

Mlawuti said hip-hop was the biggest genre supported by the youth.

“We are targeting young people and this genre is powerful.

“For the first time this year we had a rap track as song of the year at the music awards. This shows the influence that hip-hop has,” Mlawuti said.

The brand owner said they also had Cape Town rappers as their brand ambassadors.

“Our urban range is trendy and it is for young people.

“We believe these upcoming rappers are the relevant people to use,” Mlawuti added.

The brand designs and makes hats, T-shirts, sweaters and pants.

Mdipha said their latest song titled One Man Jive made its debut on uMhlobo Wenene FM last week. “We are excited about this partnership with One Man Jive and we are looking forward to working with them at all our events,” he said.

Mdipha said the song featured Cape Town crew Hype Man.

“The lyrics for the song go a little something like this, See I don't really trust all these dudes, I am a One Man Jive. I was born alone my destiny is for a One Man Jive. Vuk' uphande tsotsi get this cash cause you're a One Man Jive,” he said adding that the song was a promotional track for the brand.

“We are planning a national tour together as Cloud9Records and One Man Jive for later this year. Next week we will be shooting my music video for my latest single, Best Nite featuring Junia in Port Elizabeth,” he said. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
