Nehawu's influential Max Madlingozi region today starts its two-day elective conference where a tense leadership battle is expected.

The region, Nehawu’s biggest in the province, consists of 51 branches from around Bhisho, King William’s Town, Alice, Grahamstown, Cathcart, Stutterheim and Port Alfred.

The elective conference will see more than 240 voting delegates elect new leadership or give a new mandate to current leaders.

According to regional secretary Siyabonga Kobese, it was “all systems go” for the conference expected to be addressed by Cosatu’s provincial leaders as well as

alliance partners ANC and SACP.

Kobese said the ANC would be represented by provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane while the SACP would send its provincial secretary Xolile Nqatha.

Kobese confirmed that the current regional leadership led by Thandinkosi Cezula as chairman “will all avail themselves for re-election”.

He, however, refused to divulge who would be challenging them in what is expected to be a hotly contested poll.

The Dispatch understands that those advocating change are angry with their leaders for siding with the Cosatu’s national leadership to remove Zwelinzima Vavi as general secretary and expel Numsa from the labour federation.

Four independent sources who preferred to remain anonymous for fear of victimisation as they were not allowed to speak to the media, also accused the serving executive of not having the interests of its members at heart.

The current regional executive consists of Cezula, Kobese and Nomhle Ndubaza as regional treasury. The deputy chair position remains vacant after Ayanda Manzi left last year.

Samkelo Mpofu, a delegate from Grahamstown, yesterday said his faction would field Luks Matoto, chairman of the rural development and agrarian reform department branch, to challenge Cezula for the chair. — asandan@dispatch.co.za
