Winter Warm Up entertains despite hiccups

The non-arrival of some of the national acts expected to perform at the inaugural Winter Warm Up did not deter East Londoners from partying up a storm until the early hours of yesterday morning.

The much anticipated event, hosted at Drifters Raceway Theme Park in Cambridge, was organised by Tulas Mbuyazwe, Litha Yaya, 2Kings Africa and Chase Apparel.

2Kings Africa is behind the popular Cruel Summer Picnic held in East London every December, and Chase Apparel hosted the successful Chase Festival in Beacon Bay last summer.

Judges by the crowd’s response on the night and a stream of comments on social media by some of those who attended, the event was a huge success.

More than 2000 party-goers started arriving at the venue from midday as DJs were preparing their sets. The venue began to fill up as the sun set.

Even load-shedding did not dampen people’s spirits, as a back-up generator kicked in and carried the load until electricity was restored to the area.

Local DJs, including DJ Yoba UNLTD, Staff and others put partygoers through their paces, playing soulful house music and hip hop.

National radio DJs Tbo Touch and Sammy Sosa were expected to host the event, but Touch did not arrive and Sosa arrived later on in the evening.

The Dream Team also did not arrive, but kwaito veteran Thebe, Katt Daddy and hip hop artist Anatti, alongside other DJs, wowed the crowed until dawn.

“The event started off with a few hiccups, but it had a good finish. We had a few hiccups with booking Dream Team’s flights,” said Mbuyazwe.

“Flights were full, so we replaced them with Anatti.

“Tbo Touch cancelled at the last minute because he was double booked.”

Yesterday people took to twitter expressing what they thought about the event.

@Zee_Mbana posted: “Thanks guys. Last night was amazing #WinterWarmUp27June”

@rocellea4 said: “Big up to @ChaseApparel & @2kingsafrica for a supa dope event…Keep putting in that work. Blessing on blessings #WinterWarmUp.”

A few seemed not to have really enjoyed themselves. @_zolajoka_ said: “Retweet if you DIDNT have fun at winter warm up!”

Litha Yaya said the organisers were very happy with the reception they had received from the East London crowd. — siphem@dispatch.co.za
