Two men transporting illegal abalone from Cape Town to Gauteng were arrested when police on a routine patrol spotted them driving recklessly.

A search of their vehicle led to the discovery.

Police said in a statement the two men‚ aged 25 and 50‚ are expected to appear in the Kimberley magistrates’ court tomorrow (Wednesday‚ 1 July 2015) on a charge of illegal possession of abalone. They were nabbed yesterday.

“While on routine patrols‚ police spotted a VW Caravella driving recklessly on the N12 near the North Cape Mall. The driver was stopped and upon searching the vehicle police discovered 35 bags of abalone inside the kombi‚” the SAPS said.

“The suspects‚ who are from the Western Cape‚ were transporting the abalone from Cape Town via Kimberley to Gauteng Province.”

Police confiscated the abalone and the street value is yet still to be determined.
