A Buffalo City College lecturer was yesterday removed from his classroom and arrested for allegedly sexually violating a student.

The man is facing a sexual violation charge and cannot be named because he has not yet pleaded. Yesterday police from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit arrested him at the East London college.

It is alleged that last Friday the married lecturer offered the student a lift home, saying he was going in her direction – and she agreed. Just after he had passed the East London race track, the man allegedly stopped his car and allegedly ordered the 20-year-old to get out of the car.

Once she alighted, he allegedly tried to kiss her and allegedly fondled her breasts. He also allegedly rubbed up against her.

The lecturer had allegedly also promised to sort out “all her issues” at the college, but she declined to have sex with him.

After allegedly begging her to have sex, the woman allegedly pretended to agree, on condition they set a pre-arranged date. He allegedly agreed and took her home.

When she arrived home she told a friend what had happened and laid a formal charge at the police station against the lecturer.

The woman did not not know the man’s address and the police decided to arrest him at the college yesterday.

On the police’s arrival in the lecture hall, he co-operated and was taken to the Fleet Street Police Station where he was charged.

A Daily Dispatch team witnessed the lecturer being unceremoniously removed from the college by police officers in private clothing, who earlier arrived in an unmarked police vehicle.

Campus manager Mthimkhulu Ntanjana yesterday said he was shocked at the allegations.

“This is the first time I am hearing of this and I am very shocked. This man has been with the college for 18 years and I just cannot believe it,” he said.

He said he did not even know why he was not alerted, as campus manager when police arrived at the college. “One would have thought that I would be informed but I was not told, perhaps it is because I was not in my office.”

Speaking about the accused, Ntanjana said: “The lecturer has access to students everyday.

“I do not want to lie, I was not even aware of any complaints against him.”

The lecturer spent last night in police custody and will make his first appearance in the East London Magistrate’s Court today. — siyab@dispatch.co.za
