Hit-Maker Berita will be bringing her new music and some old tunes to The Venue at Hemingways later this month.

The Walter Sisulu University graduate made her debut in the music industry in 2012 when she released her album, Conquering Spirit.

The first single from the album, Thandolwethu, grabbed the attention of Afro-soul music lovers from all over the country.

The album itself went on to win the Metro FM award for best Afro-pop album.

Berita said the last time she had a solo show in East London was after releasing her debut album.

“East London was the first city that heard my music and embraced it. Last show I did back home was in 2012 at the Orient Theatre.

I want people to see that I have grown musically, because I was younger then,” she said.

Berita recently won a Wawela Music award for best songwriter for Conquering Spirit.

Organised by the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (Samro), the Wawelas are aimed at recognising and celebrating Samro members – composers, authors, lyricists and publishers who have lit up international and local stages, screens and airwaves with their dazzling talent.

“It was humbling winning that award. It has given me more confidence as a songwriter and now I am able to mentor other writers as well,” she said.

“As I settle into my career, I hope to have workshops for aspiring song writers.”

The Zimbabwe-born singer said East London is still her home “but for now I am here in Johannesburg because of my line of work”.

She said she would be performing music from her debut album and her latest offering, Songs of Empowerment. The 10-track album, released last year, was produced by the same Johannesburg-based music company, Thami Music, that produced her debut album. She collaborated with the likes of Oliver Mtukudzi and Hugh Masekela.

Berita said people should expect to hear some soulful sounds that will make them dance.

“I am really looking forward to performing in East London. I will be performing with a local band,” she said.

Hemingways Casino marketing manager Neville Austin said: “Hemingways always prides itself in bringing the top entertainment acts to our guests.

Berita sings in isiXhosa, which is widely spoken in the East London region, so our guests will relate to her beautiful melodies sung in their own language.”

lBerita performs at The Venue on July 31. Tickets cost R120 and are available from Computicket. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
