Ginsberg residents woke up to a scenes of chaos as hundreds community members embarked on mass action over service delivery this morning.

Police monitoring the Ginsberg township service delivery protest

The service delivery protest, which started around 6am, saw the main access road leading to the King Williams Town  closed for several hours as police tried unsuccessfully to negotiate with community leaders. The protesters included women and school children who were  wearing their school uniforms.

One of the community leaders told the Dispatch that: “We will shut down schools, business and burn the township.”

He said that they were demanding that newly-appointed BCM mayor Alfred Mtsi address their demands as a matter of urgency.

Their demands include proper roads and decent jobs.

More than 20 police vehicles are on the scene and several community members, including a student, have already been arrested for public disorder.

Police officers could be seen chasing people into the township and arresting them one by one.

The police have been negotiating with community leaders for the roads to be reopened after they fired stun grenades.   Police managed to disperse the crowd but people again gather near the Steve Biko Centre.

Roads have been blockaded using stones and burning tyres.
