In any other tournament a clash between Mfundo Gwayana and Luzuko Siyo would be a sure ticket seller.

But in a Sijuta Promotion (SP) show this evening, this fight is almost an afterthought despite the intrigue it will provide between the two former SA junior-flyweight champions.

Besides pitting Duncan Village in Siyo and Mdantsane in Gwayana against each other, there are other ingredients making this fight a potential tournament stealer.

The two boxers are almost at the tail end of their careers although they are still young enough to kick some butt in the ring.

Add their styles, and you have a fight of the year candidate, especially as a bloodthirsty Siyo is involved.

Siyo is renowned for his take-no- prisoners attitude which at times has been his Achilles heel, as he tends to brawl rather than use his brains.

One such fight was his slugfest against current champion Bongani Silila when the pair dropped bombs at each other for nine rounds in a sickening exchange of leather until Siyo ran out gas and surrendered both his unbeaten record and title to his challenger.

The fight is believed to have shortened Siyo’s career as he is yet to recapture the form that made him one of the young talents in the land and  even Golden Gloves Promotion (GGP) prospect of the year honours. His defeat by the relative average Filipino Raymond Tabugon in his last fight last December has now rung alarm bells about his status as the top boxer, not only in the land but in the region.

Gwayana, who dethroned Silila, is also fighting to save his career which has plummeted having lost his last bout against Mzuvukile Magwaca.

There will not be too much technique involved as both boxers only know one way of fighting and that is coming forward.

“This is the best fight of the tournament,” quipped Sidinile as he hoisted the arms of the two boxers at the premedical this week.

Indeed it is almost a travesty of justice that the spectators will only have six rounds to watch these two gladiators. But the shortage of  rounds might just add to the expected war of attrition as they will be still fresh by the end of the fight.
