Young and old partygoers danced the night away as loud beats from the Africa All In One music extravaganza engulfed Mthatha at the weekend.

The occasion was used as both a family outing and a get-together for city revellers as hundreds of people, dressed to the nines and driving luxury cars, arrived with camping chairs and cooler boxes.

Scores of artists from different musical genres entertained the crowds from Saturday evening until the wee hours yesterday.

Artists included Mthatha gospel sensation and award-winner Bethusile Mcinga, Dumi Mkokstad, popular kwaito outfit BigNuz, R&B singer Ntando, MaJoy, Poppy and DJs PK, Sugar, Angisto and Tonic.

Acapella group The Soil cancelled at the 11th hour after one of the band members had a family bereavement.

Umhlobo Wenene FM presenter Putco Mafani MC’d the event and kept the crowds entertained in between the change of artists.

The venue, OR Tambo district hall, was transformed into a magnificent platform with beautiful interior décor and lighting.

Security was tight as the unsmiling bouncers made sure everyone inside was there legally. No incidents were reported.

Sponsors of the event included The Daily Dispatch, the Department of Arts and Culture, OR Tambo District Municipality, Solid Media Specialists and Legends Gaming and Promotions.

The show got off to a great start with Mthatha gospel sensation and award-winning Bethusile Mcinga and his counterpart Dumi Mkokstad lifting the spirits of the crowd, who screamed and jumped up to show their appreciation.

The house came down after the traditional R&B singer Ntando took to the stage.

A few women went on stage to be closer to him as he played back-to-back songs from his albums.

The musician had the crowd eating out of his hands when he sang lines from reggae icon’s Lucky Dube’s recordings.

Organiser Marara Smondile dubbed the inaugural event a success, saying they were satisfied with the positive response of Mthatha partygoers.

Smondile said: “In the wake of the xenophobic attacks early this year, the message from the event was Africans must unite no matter where they come from.

We are one people,” Smondile said. — loyisom@dispatch.co.za
