The South African Student Congress (Sasco) has won student elections at Walter Sisulu University but failed to secure the majority of seats at some campuses.

Political formations contesting in the elections included Sasco, Pan Africanist Students’ Movement of Azania (Pasma), ANCYL, Azanian People’s Organisation Student Convention (Azasco), Students’ Christian Organisation (SCO) and United Democratic Students’ Movement (Udesmo).

The Democratic Alliance Students Organisation and EFF Students Command did not take part in the elections.

Seat allocation at some campuses would depend on negotiations as no clear student organisation had emerged with a 50 plus majority.

WSU acting spokesman Thando Cezula said it was clear that Sasco was ahead in terms of the votes.

Cezula said a total of 3737 votes were cast by students. Out of seven seats in Butterworth, Sasco won three seats, Pasma had three and SCO had one.

In Mthatha, 15 seats were up for grabs from 6711 votes. Sasco had five seats, ANCYL won four, Pasma had three and SCO also had three seats.

Five seats were on offer in Queenstown. Sasco won three seats while Pasma had two seats.

Cezula said the results for Buffalo City campus were still pending due to verification.

He said the elections had progressed smoothly. “Nothing serious happened,” Cezula said.
