Two Eastern Cape hopefuls have made it through to the
Idols SA top 10 after an announcement by the judges on Sunday.
Sixteen-year-old Loyiso Gijana from Uitenhage, and Amanda Antony, 22, of Port Elizabeth, perform at the State Theatre in Pretoria from next week to see if they can garner votes to make it to the next round.
Four men and four women advanced to the top 10 and two more contestants were given a second chance at victory, after a vote from the panel of Idols SA Season 11 judges, Randall Abrahams, Gareth Cliff, Unathi Msengana, and Somizi Mhlongo.
A record three million votes were cast for the top 16.
Cliff had called Gijana’s performance in the top 16 guys spectacular programme a “tour de force”.
Antony, from Port Elizabeth, hopes to own a recording studio one day.
Karabo Mogane from Nelspruit, who is 24, has come a long way since Mhlongo’s much-publicised comment about his “dishwashing-water personality” at his original audition.
Rhema Varrie from Alberton, 21, also made it through, saying earlier he hoped to win the competition so he could pursue a career in music.
And 24-year-old Siphelele Ngcobo from Inanda near Durban is in the mix, having won the voters’ hearts with his performance of Omi’s hit, Cheerleader, in the top 16 guys spectacular.
Dineo Moseki, a 21-year-old hopeful from Vryburg, had Mhlongo saying she had “brought the chakalaka” with her, during a performance of Sia’s Chandelier last week.
Elwira Standili who hails from Worcester and is 22 years old, got the nod with Msengana saying last week, her performance of the Taylor Swift hit, Style, was perfect.
Mmatema Moremi a 23-year-old contestant from Limpopo, joined his colleagues in the top 10, with Mhlongo saying he was “devastatingly gifted”.
The judges decided which two singers from the remaining eight contestants were worthy of a second chance.
“Poppie, you’re in the top 10!” Mhlongo announced to 20-year-old Nadia Herbst from Paarl.
And then it fell to Randall Abrahams to break the news that Lungisa Xhamela, 24, from Langa in the Cape, was the final top 10 contestant!
Next Sunday will see these 10 singers performing again for those all-important fan votes in the top 10 spectacular, broadcast live from the State Theatre in Pretoria. — DDR
