DA’s student body takes NMMU SRC in landslide victory

Not even the introduction of the Economic Freedom Fighters Students Command (EFFSC) to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) SRC ballot paper, could deter the Democratic Alliance Students Organisation (Daso) from retaining control of the campus.

The Independent Electoral Commission’s results released yesterday, showed that Daso scored a landslide victory, with an overall margin of 60% of the votes, and will take control of the NMMU SRC.

NMMU spokeswoman Roslyn Baatjies said 6942 students cast their votes on Wednesday.

“ represents a 34.7% voter turnout of the NMMU student body.

“This is an increase of more than 4% on last year’s election, and a 12% increase since the 2013 election,” she said.

Last year, Daso won the SRC elections with a 12-9 three-seat victory over Sasco.

Baatjies said that there were no incidents on voting day or during the pre-election build-up.

DA Youth national chairman Yusuf Cassim said their re-election was a sign that students had confidence in Daso.

“This is a humbling victory for us. It shows that students appreciate our good governance.

“They have endorsed us to continue to deliver and improve their lives,” Cassim said.

He said the campus victory would also give the DA a boost in its 2016 local government election campaign.

Daso was up against the SA Students Congress (Sasco) and newcomers EFFSC, in what was dubbed as the toughest NMMU SRC election to date.

The EFFSC were contesting on the campus for the first time, while Sasco and Daso have been rivals for a couple of years.

Daso scooped seven of the central portfolio seats and Sasco took five, while the EFFSC could only manage one seat.

Daso won representative seats at the main north and south campuses, while Sasco won the seat for Missionvale and the Second Avenue campuses. Daso won all eight seats in the Oppidani Council , the seat for the International Office for Education, as well as four of the university’s seven faculty seats.

Sasco provincial secretary Yanga Zicina congratulated Daso on their victory, saying Sasco needed to regroup and focus.

“We are grateful for the 2000-plus students who have shown confidence in Sasco by voting.

“We congratulate the DA for winning.

“We are now reminded that we need to focus and pave a way forward,” Zicina said.

Sasco representatives were elected to the other three faculties.
