The Eastern Cape government has appointed the former chief financial officer of National Treasury, Daluhlanga Majeke, as head of the provincial treasury.
The appointment follows the recent promotion of former treasury head Marion Mbina-Mthembu to provincial director-general by premier Phumulo Masualle to replace Dr Loyiso Mbabane.
Mbabane quit after he was arrested on rape charges involving a relative after serving only four weeks as DG. The charges were later dropped.
Majeke was appointed as new provincial treasury head effective from October 1 and yesterday was officially introduced to staff at an event held in Bhisho.
Majeke boasts an impressive record, having worked both in public and private sectors.
As head of the provincial treasury he will be responsible for managing the coffers of the province.
Treasury spokeswoman Nosisa Sogayise said the department welcomed Majeke’s appointment.
“His education credentials also stands him in good stead for the task ahead as he has a BA , BCom (Financial Management) and Masters in Business Leadership,” Sogayise said.
Majeke is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS) and Institute of Directors in Southern Africa.
Welcoming him yesterday, finance MEC Sakhumzi Somyo said he was concerned about how to turn around the economy of the province. “Supply chain management must drive development of our province.
“You are welcomed to this energetic team,” Somyo said. — siphem@dispatch.co.za
