Hands off Madiba, Mandla tells king

King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo has been given a tongue-lashing by chief Mandla Mandela for his derogatory and “baseless” verbal attacks on Nelson Mandela.

Mandela called on Dalindyebo to let his revered grandfather “rest in peace”.

“We have got nothing to do with the kingship of Dalindyebo and my grandfather’s name should not be brought into this controversy,” he said.

“We are not kings and have never had an interest in the throne as Mandelas. People must let Dalibhunga rest in peace and not drag his name into controversies.”

Mandla, the chief of Mvezo, was responding to Dalindyebo’s furious attack on Mandela and Mandla on Sunday.

Dalindyebo was speaking in Bumbane Great Place on Sunday at an imbizo attended by hundreds of AbaThembu ahead of his Constitutional Court appeal and a resolution to nominate his 23-year-old son Prince Azenathi Zanelizwe Dalindyebo to serve as an acting king.

The AbaThembu resolved to raise funds for the appeal.

The king accused Mandela of being the main “conspirator” behind his arrest and conviction for arson, defeating the ends of justice and kidnapping for which he was sentenced to 12 years in jail.

He claimed Mandela had wanted him dethroned.

“The crimes were committed in 1995 and my grandfather was never an applicant and complainant,” Mandla said.

“It was long before the chiefdom of Mandela was revived. We have nothing to do with the kingship of Dalindyebo and have no interest whatsoever.”

He said the king should rather face up to the challenges ahead of him and focus on how to resolve them rather than accusing the Mandelas.

“We are a very junior house in the AmaDlomo royalty. We cannot have any interest in the dethronement of Zwelibanzi,” Mandla said.

“Even if he loses the throne, it will be passed on to his sons or brothers. There are many houses which are senior to the Mandela house who could ascend the throne, not us.”

Meanwhile, National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesman Luxolo Tyali said the Mthatha High Court would today hear Dalindyebo’s application for an extension of bail.

Dalindyebo is out on R6000 bail.

He is due to start his jail term on Friday if his application fails. He was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment by the Supreme Court of Appeal on October 1 and given 14 days to report to prison.
