Lawyers welcome new deputy judge presidents

The appointment of two deputy judge presidents in the Eastern Cape has been welcomed by lawyers around the province.

Last week the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) appointed Judge Zamani Nhlangulela and Judge Dawid van Zyl as new deputy judge presidents in Mthatha and Bhisho respectively.

Nhlangulela was the only candidate for the position in Mthatha while Van Zyl went head to head with newly appointed judge Selby Mbengene.

Van Zyl had been acting in the Bhisho position for the last three years.

Black Lawyers’ Association president Busani Mabunda welcomed the appointments.

“We welcome the decision of the JSC. We believe they will both dispense justice. They are both good appointments. It will be good for the province of the Eastern Cape and for the country as a whole,” Mabunda said.

National Association of Democratic Lawyers’ (Nadel) deputy president Mvuzo Notyesi said they too were happy about the appointments.

“We are most pleased about the appointments. They are both seasoned lawyers who have shown great dedication ... and advocate for the transformation of the judiciary,” he said.

“We believe they will lead the Eastern Cape in the right direction in terms of making decisions in technical cases.”
