Alice-born Khanya gets big break

He may not have won the SABC3 TV presenter search but the competition gave Khanya Siyengo enough exposure for his talent to be discovered.

The Alice resident has been selected as the presenter of the station’s Win a Home reality show.

Siyengo, who holds a graveyard shift on Goodhope FM, said presenting Win a Home, which airs at 7.30pm every Friday on SABC3, has been the big break he has been praying for.

“I mean a few months ago I did not know how I would be paying rent for my place, let alone get food. Then things changed. My dreams started becoming a reality, I’m in a better place today than I was yesterday.

“Honestly believe that I’m just your ordinary guy who wants to do extra ordinary things,” said the 27-year-old.

The show, now on episode eight, follows 14 contestants who get to compete for a R100000 cash prize.

The 14 designers are paired up in three teams and must decorate a room each week.

The team with the worst room will have a designer eliminated.

Siyengo holds a law degree from the University of Cape Town, which he says was to “appease his parents”.

“I grew up with a great family where my parents would’ve loved it for me to be an accountant or lawyer but I had other plans to pursue things that make me happy.

“So I actually fully committed to pursuing a career in entertainment in 2010,” he said.

The presenter search competition, in which he made it all the way the top five, was not his first attempt at cracking the industry.

While a student at UCT he entered the GoodHope FM radio presenter search and in 2012 was a finalist on MTV Base’s VJ search.

“I always knew my time would come and will always cherish that chapter; the experience of just following your dreams and seeing people believe in you – I can’t describe it.

“When I look back I was incredibly lucky to have made it that far,” he said.

Siyengo, is not the first person from the Eastern Cape to land a national presenting job.

He joins the likes of Sinazo Yolwa (Top Billing, Real Goboza and So You Think You Can Dance), Luthando Sosha (Live Amp) and Mijelo Ngoma (YoTV).

Lukhanyo Sikwebu the show’s public relations and production manager, said Siyengo was ideal for the job because of the passion he showed on the presenter search.

“Khanya clearly has a strong work ethic and is determined to learn. Win a Home is an intense reality show that necessitates him to be in a lot of locations, within a limited amount of time.

“Khanya is quite suitable for the challenge.

“Also, the viewers love his energy,” said Sikwebu. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
