Two East London pupils have done their province and country proud after earning a top 10 place in an international event for Christian education schools in the United States.

Mihlali Sipayile and Jasmine Norris of Gonubie Christian High School were part of a South African delegation, who participated in various disciplines against 24 other countries at the international showcase.

The group were chosen to attend the International Student Convention (ISC), which is for all accelerated Christian education schools around the world.

Sipayile and Norris, both in Grade 10, performed a duet of I Surrender by Hillsong and finished eighth overall.

ISC affords pupils from the schools a chance to showcase their talents in various categories such as music, speech or drama, athletics, arts and academics.

The pair finished in second place in the music category at the nationals, held last year and also received an international nomination to attend ISC.

Norris told the Daily Dispatch yesterday they were in the US for three weeks from May 20 to June 7 but the results were only announced last week on October 29.

She said the experience was one she would never forget. “It was quite exciting, the competition was only during the first week and then for the rest of the time we got a chance to visit New Mexico, California and Arizona.

“We got to meet and interact with pupils from all over the world, which was such an enlightening experience because we got a chance to talk about our different countries and our school systems,” she said.

Norris, who wants to pursue music after school, said ISC not only provided them with an opportunity to venture overseas but was also a great w ay for pupils to gain experience.

“Spiritually I have gained so much, we spoke about God and Christianity, we shared in the word and did a lot of praise and worship, it was such a fulfilling trip and although we did not get gold or silver, we gave it our best and we are happy with the results,” Sipayile said.

Their school principal, Adele Pfiffner, said although it was not the first time the school had pupils attend ISC, they were proud of the pair’s performance.
